Deadline: Emily Osment & Matt Shively To Topline CBS Comedy Pilot ’25’

The Real O’Neals alum Matt Shively and Young & Hungry star Emily Osment will lead the cast of CBS’ hybrid comedy pilot 25. Denée Benton (Lifetime’s UnReal) and Jessie Ennis (HBO’s Veep) will co-star in the pilot, which Chris Koch has come on board to direct. Osment is coming off a starring turn as Gabi Diamond on Freeform’s Young & Hungry, which is expected to end after five seasons. She is done with the series, and the CBS pilot has her in first position.

Written by Hilary Winston, 25 centers on twentysomething Kyle (Shively), who comes to Austin to finally convince his old best friend from camp, Kate (Osment), that they are perfect for each other. Unfortunately, she just got engaged. A lot of guys would give up; Kyle is not one of those guys. But to Kyle’s surprise, even though he came to town looking for “the one,” he might end up with much more than that. Shively’s Kyle is a smart, intense and confident young man who has moved to Austin ostensibly to start his own software company. But he’s really in town to declare his love for Kate.

Osment’s Kate is a fun, competitive, bright medical student. Kyle may have been in love with her for the past decade or so — but as far as Kate is concerned, he is strictly in the friend zone. She is delighted when her longtime boyfriend Jimmy proposes to her, just after Kyle arrives in town. Benton will play Morgan, Kate’s roommate and best friend. Morgan knows right away that Kyle is angling to win Kate away from her fiancé — and although she understands Kyle’s feelings, she wants to protect Kate from getting hurt.

Ennis will play Becca, Kate and Morgan’s good friend, who can be “the life (or death)” of the party based on her mood. Winston and Koch executive produce alongside Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver for Sony Pictures TV and CBS TV Studios. Osment co-stars with a one-year deal on Chuck Lorre’s upcoming Netflix comedy series The Kominsky Method after recurring on his CBS sitcom Mom. Shively played Jimmy O’Neal on ABC’s The Real O’Neals and also co-starred in the movie Power Rangers. Benton, known for her role as contestant Ruby Carter on UnReal, was nominated for a Tony Award for her role in Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812. Ennis next will be seen in New Line’s Life of the Party.

Deadline: Emily joins Netflix Comedy Series ‘The Kominsky Method’

Netflix is rounding out the cast for The Kominsky Method, a 10-episode single-camera comedy series from Chuck Lorre, starring Michael Douglas, Alan Arkin and Nancy Travis. Sarah Baker (Young Sheldon, Big Little Lies) is set as a series regular and Susan Sullivan (Castle, Dharma & Greg), Emily Osment (Hannah Montana, Young & Hungry), Graham Rogers (Quantico, Ray Donovan), Ashleigh LaThrop (Fifty Shades movies), Jenna Lyng Adams, Melissa Tang (Mom, The Big Bang Theory), and Casey Brown will recur.

Written by Lorre, The Kominsky Method centers on Sandy Kominsky (Douglas), an actor who years ago had a brief fling with success and is now a revered Hollywood acting coach. Arkin plays his long-suffering agent and friend, Norman. Nancy Travis also stars. Osment is Theresa, a twentysomething student in Sandy Kominsky’s acting class. Underneath her sweet exterior is a formidable actress who can’t wait to show Sandy, and the world, what she’s capable of.

On Young & Hungry, Betty White guest-stars as the quick-witted Ms. Wilson, who has a tendency to slip in sexual innuendos and provocative language whenever she can. Offscreen, costar Emily Osment says the role isn’t much of a stretch for the 95-year-old Hollywood icon. “She’s so funny and crass,” says Osment, who plays chef Gabi on the Freeform series. “She’s a legend! I still can’t believe I got to work with her.” Much like their characters on the show, Osment and White’s relationship on set quickly took an unexpected turn. “She called me a bitch one time, which I loved,” the Los Angeles native, 25, tells Us Weekly. “She was like, ‘Honey, you’re what we like to call a bitch [because] you’ve got blonde hair and blue eyes.’ She has blonde hair and blue eyes as well, so she was like, ‘We like to call ourselves that.’”

Osment reveled in the unconventional compliment from the actress. “I think I’m in a bitch club with Betty White!” she jokes. “To hear such a sweet, sweet woman who’s in her 90s use the type of language she uses — she’s hysterical.” On the series, now in its fifth season, Osment understands fans’ frustration with Gabi’s off-and-on relationship with her boss, Josh (Jonathan Sadowski) — but hints that the ups and downs will be worth the wait. “You want to see someone having turmoil or falling in love or out of love, that’s what makes good TV,” she explains, noting another tumultuous onscreen romance. “When we all watched Friends, we wanted Ross and Rachel to be together so bad,” she says. “They would get together for a few episodes and then they would break up because that’s the fun part: the chase.” Continue reading
